Title: Used CZ85's for sale
Post by: Boogalou on November 20, 2006, 12:15:31 PM
I just wanted to inform anyone who's interested that CDNN has some used CZ85's in good to VG condition for sale.  You have to download their catalog and they are on page 53.

It's not a very good pic but they look to be the transitional type models.

Does anyone here think that is a good deal?  Own a transitional?  What mags will they take?  Thanks.

They're pre-B's with ambi controls.

You decide.

I just recieved one of these last week. Looks to have been fired very little.

Transitional is definitely the word. Mine is essentially an 85 Combat: adjustable sight and drop free mag. Has a spade hammer, but a squared trigger guard. It has a blued slide and an enamelled frame, but all serial numbers match. There is no firing pin safety, and it won't take aftermarket mags - new factory mags work perfectly however.

The bluing is in really good shape with only a couple tiny scratches. Unfortunately, the enamel has not stood up as well; there are quite a few nicks and chips on the frame.

Other than that, it's in great shape and is one heck of a sweet shooter.

I'm pleased as punch.

I don't like the squared trigger guard - this was one big mistake CZ has made.  I do like that they do NOT have the ugly firing pin HOLE.

I suppose they are $280+20(ship) + FFL(about 25 here) = $325

1)  What is the trigger like?  Compared to other CZs?  I read a report on the intital 85s decades ago that they had better metal on the trigger parts.

2)  Got a pic?  (If not OK - I surely don't know how to post on this site).

I suppose they have the PreB safety with the wierd detent, etc.  I guess if the frame is beat up, I can strip and refinish in GunKote.

I have several PreB mags, so I'm OK there.  BTW, if I refinished it, I think I'd faile off the ugly square trigger guard!

Briang2ad,

Shipping is only $10 from CDNN plus a couple bucks for signature confirmation. I believe you can also add some accessories to the order without incurring additional shipping charges.

I haven't fired enough CZs to really review the trigger. The DA trigger is smooth enough, but I'm really only ever carry the pistol in SA. If you really milk the SA trigger, you can feel a bit of scritchyness, but it's so short and light, you don't notice.

I don't have a still camera right now, so I can't post a pic. It's really not that badly beat up, but it's evident that the nicks are from abuse rather than normal wear and it drives me nuts that someone might see them and think I'd treat a weapon like that. It may make a journey to Virgil Tripp's and get hard chromed.

I don't have real strong feelings about the trigger guard either way. I do think the round trigger guards look classier, but the current squared style is easier to find leather for.

I'm also not sure what to tell you about the safety - it has a nice positive "click", but I don't experience anything like a weird detent. When I picked it up, the nooks and crannys were full of cosmo, and the safety was a little sludgy. A good blasting of Gun Scrubber and a spritz out with G96 and it's smooth and crisp now.

On the safety:  Is it like the NEW one (no hole) or the old PreB one (two holes and the spring and plunger INSIDE the safety lever - not the frame)?

Are the sights adjustable and LOW profile (unlike the new ones)?

Does the trigger have a travel adjust screw?

Is the hammer a spur or commander style?

There is one in CHROME in another post here - look VERY nice.

Boy, I really wish I could post a picture of this thing!

The safety has no hole. Seems to be equivalent to current style.

The sights are definitely not like the current production: they have no markings, the front sight is staked on and the rear is fully adjustable, with the windage adjustment being down in the meat of the slide, below the dovetail.

The trigger has an over travel adjustment via a slotted set screw.

Haven't seen that chrome one, I'll do some looking. See who did the deed on it.

Is the slide stop/release ambi?  (One on the CDNN catalog is.

If so, I wonder if this is a common problem.  IN the thread below, someone states that there was a design flaw in the early Combats where the lever junction breaks:

www.thefiringline.com/for...ansitional (http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=127179&highlight=cz+transitional)

I would expect there are NO parts for the slide stop available.

Thanks!

Mine seems to be plenty stout -  I hope I don't have any problems with it.

Raytracer:  So the slide stop is ambidextrous?

Anyone know anything about this being a problem?

Yep. Mine's fully ambi, 'cept for the mag release.

A problem with ambi slide stop?   A couple of folks, over the years, have had problems with the right-side stop breaking.  A COUPLE (not a bunch.)

In one case, the owner sent the gun back to CZ-USA (even though it wasn't a CZ-USA gun, and they installed a new right-side release; the old parts weren't available.)

The guns described in this ad seem to be late transitionals, so most parts are probably going to be more similar to the new Bs than the pre-B.

The gun, in effect, is equivalent to the current 85 Combat, except the mag well *MAY* be tighter.

Walt:  Thanks!  I guess these may be a good deal.  (I do like the looks of the low profile adjustable sight better than the high profile one they use now).

Are you talking about the ones in the add?  The CDNN add says fixed sites, just so you know and NOT 85 Combat, but 85.  There is a difference.  If it was the Combat version, I'd be all over it too!

Even though the ad says "fixed sights", mine came with adjustable.

Also, no FP safety or mag brake - even though the slide is marked CZ-85.

FWIW.

I considered getting one but I already have a couple of PreB's and I'd like my next CZ75 to be a .40 S&W.

I talked to my salesman today and he said that he's seen a few with adjustables on them but the ones left don't have them and there were only a couple left.  Sounds like you guys got lucky!  Congrats!!  :D

Just because, I went ahead and ordered one of these.  Mine does not have the adjustable sites on it.  Completely blued, both frame and slide, spur hammer, round trigger guard.  Made in '87.  Stepped base mag.  Mag brake was functional, I fixed that already.  My aftermarket CZ mags will just go in but you can't get them out.  I think this one is truely a pre-B gun.

I'd pull the slide off it but I can't figure out how the right side piece comes off.  Anybody know how it comes off?  All I can tell is that it goes on over the pin that sticks thru.  :\

It doesn't have to come off to remove the slide.

That piece remains in the frame.  The slide stop end fits into it.

(It's held in by a small spring that is part of the slide stop assembly.   Its a pain to remove, and there's no need to, unless something breaks.)

Thanks Walt.  No wonder I couldn't figure it out.  It looks like it locks onto the shaft somehow and to me anyway, looks different than what CZ shows in the 85B manual.

edit:  It came right apart.  Just the usual dirt in the hard to get to spots but the sear area was actually quite clean.  Now to try to dig up another standard capacity mag that will work in it.

Just push the slide stop out from the opposite side.  The lever stays in the frame.
