Title: CZ 75 "Retro?"
Post by: Hockler on September 27, 2010, 01:29:33 PM
Anyone nab one of these? They have B model internals, but look like the 2nd gen what what I've read. Supposedly less than 1,000 were made years back.

I was hoping to land one so parts would be plentiful (and Mec Gars would hopefully fit), but wound up with genuine pre-B I just had worked on anyways.

CZ 75 Transition

B slide on a Pre-B frame, not uncommon, surely more than 1000 made

you can also see reverse examples, Pre-B slide and B frame.

price is good though.

No, the Retro was a special-run CZ made a few years back.  It is 100% CZ-75B with old-style slide serrations and a rounded trigger guard.  They are not common.

Too bad they don't have anymore, as I would be in possession of one.

I snagged one a few years back...it sits in my lineup between the true pre-Bs and the 75Bs (can't help myself...they keep following me home)...also have a couple of the Semi-Compact models...

Cliff,
How about posting a photo?

The retro is very nice - CZ should really put them out again.  Better sights, takes new mags, simple safety, MUCH better finish.  Other than the DUMB FPB, they are wayyyyy coooool.

I also have one of these unusual and very cool Retro models, dated 2004. I found it at a local gun shop and had spotted the spur hammer from across the room, thinking at first that it was a pre-b.  I believe less than 800 were made. I would mention that 1) the proportions of the scalloping of the cocking serrations, 2) the shape and size of the round trigger guard, and 3) and the shape and styling of the Retro-only slide stop, are not identical to a pre-b gun, but all are close approximations. The Retro really is a beast of its own. I threw a set of Vintge Gun Grips waffle-style grip panels on mine just to confuse matters further LOL! I love it.

AFAIC, CZ should never have changed from the rounded trigger guard in the first place. It's the least attractive feature of a modern 75, in my opinion.

And I love the spur hammer!

The hooked trigger guard got popular for two handed combat shooting.  I tried it that way for a while when I had a 92.FS.  Stopped doing the finger hook though.  Interestingly, now , it's fallen out of favor, because the newer style is to ride your off hand finger snug under the trigger guard.  Which is how I do it now.

As to spur hammer, shoot a few hundred rounds.  It makes my hand bleed from the bite pinch.  It bit my wife, who now refuses to shoot it.  It bit friends.  I use a round hammer now.

Yeah, and in terms of eye appeal in handguns, this was one of the worst trends ever. CZ was actually a bit late to the show with this, behind S&W and Beretta, to mention a couple.

Being as this old thread has been recently revived;

The CZ 75 Original, RSR Special  (aka 'Retro') was made for RSR distributors circa 2004.
Based on information presented on the internet, less than 1000 were made.

This one was purchased in 2004.
At the time I was looking for a full size frame for my Kadet kit (initially was on a 75C).
This was the least expensive, new, full sized 75 I had been able to find ($359).
The grips it came with sucked and they were replaced with these (much preferred IMO) repro waffle grips.
Hogue grip screws replaced the originals.

Edited to add: Mec-Gar, as well as CZ 25 round mags work just fine in this one.

Very nice Steve B, I like the waffle grips.

I did the exact same thing to my RSR "Retro".....the Hogue slotted grip screws, and the Vintage Gun Grips waffle-style reproduction grips. These grips took just a tiny bit of trimming to fit perfectly (they were cast from original 70's waffle grips and the newer "B" frame is a bit different).  I like the resulting grip-feel of the gun. Good accurate reproduction, good quality product, IMHO. Glad I bought them. I came across them randomly on ebay for about $28, and have now bought several more sets direct from the manufacturer in Florida. I also ordered one pair in a vintage brown color option, which looks great on my Cold War Commemorative.

Cheers!

That's odd.
These are actually the second set of waffle grips I installed as the first set developed a small pit and were returned (good customer service from Vintage BTW).
Neither set required any additional fitting whatsoever.

I had to trim about 1/32 of an inch off the very top edge of the inset framing rails on the inside of each panel, so the grip panel would sit down properly and flush into the gun's grip-frame cutout. No other part of the framing rail needed any sort of modification.  I also trimmed a tiny bit of the top inside rear of the grip so it would not contact the frame. I did this on all four pairs I now have, as none of them would otherwise lay properly on my mid 90's 75 Bs or on my 2004 Retro or my 2010 Cold War. No biggie, it was quite easy using an exacto blade, and they otherwise fit very well. I did have to swap out a couple sets with the manufacturer because some of the panels had tiny air bubbles in the waffles from the moulding process, but VGG switched them out for me promptly with no hassles.

Wow. I'd like to have one of those. In fact, I chose the cold war edition recently because it was basically the same idea except they have the newer trigger guard.

Here's mine:

Well I joined the club! Picked up this CZ 75 RSR Retro BNIB in a trade      ( Beretta 92 Inox, I think I did well!)
Haven't shot it yet as I still can't get a solid number from anyone on how many of these were produced. I think I will when I get home next week though! Already in the market for a Phantom as well.

MuddyWaterMan, welcome and congratulations on the new purchase.

1000 pistols is the number that was going around on the internet when these were originally introduced.
If you want to know precisely how many were produced, you might contact the RSR group directly as I believe they were the ones who placed the special order for these pistols.
http://www.rsrgroup.com/ (http://www.rsrgroup.com/)

IMO: I wouldn't worry too much about shooting it, since other than a few cosmetic differences they are really just 75B models.
These RSR originals were the least expensive 75Bs I could find when I was looking in 2004 and it may take 20~30 years for them to gain any appreciable value (if at all) due to rarity.
Any increased value seems to have followed CZ raising their overall prices during the last several years (applies to all used CZs) rather than limited production.

Whatever you should choose to do, enjoy your new pistol.  :)

Hello, I wanted to join in and throw up a couple of pics of my retro. Actually, I bought it off a fello member, Prom93, about a year ago but since then she has had a trip to the CZ custom shop for some work. It is by far my favorite CZ now. ;D

Anyone know the value of one NIB? I am thinking about trading mine for a Phantom or selling outright and can't find a lot of info.
