Title: Discretion with Octane
Post by: Performify on April 26, 2017, 04:56:08 PM
I was taking some shots of my FNX-45 Tac and figured I'd shoot a couple pictures of the reason I sold it.

and one shot without the can from when I picked it up:

Is that a .45 or 9mm?

I'm looking at picking up a DW 1911 and interested in the discretion or a specialist.

If I got a specialist I would add a threaded barrel and suppressor sights. I have an Octane 45 but will be getting a 9mm.

Have you shot it yet?

It's a .45.   For whatever reason I've never gotten into the 9mm 1911's.

I've had it out to the range just once for a few initial break-in rounds.  Shot flawlessly and confirmed quickly that I no longer needed the FNX-45 Tactical :)

I'll get it out this weekend and do a full range report.

It's a blemish model but I can't find any flaws in the finish at all.

So why'd you sell the FNX ?  The Discretion is a nice 1911 but they are in different leagues. It's more of a nostalgia pistol, never built with the idea of running with a can. ( Food & Debris Shields Up ! )  Have you had issues with failure to feeds yet ? The factory recoil spring on the Discretion is woefully weak, at 10lbs. I think they do that so all the gun store customers will be in awe of how easy it is to rack the slide while they're standing there at the store counter. Maybe hoping most potential buyers would only use the included factory mags. I ended up going all the way up to a linear 24lb spring to get the speed of the slide under control while shooting suppressed. It would cycle with the two factory mags but no others (Wilsons, Tripps, McCormicks....). I could tell the slide was whip-lashing while shooting, and ejecting spent cases back at 5 O'Clock and about 15 feet. The decorative cuts in the slide forend lighten it up enough that attention to recoil spring weights is required. Don't get me wrong, the Discretion is a nice top shelf 1911, as is the Valor, but I'd never sell my FNX for it. I'd probably sell my car, but not my guns.

So why'd you sell the FNX ?

I actually have sold all my FN's -- well, sold off all but one that's currently for sale, the last remaining of my former FN collection is a FNX-45 in FDE that's listed for sale.

Driven primarily out of falling out of love with the SCAR platform and the lack of innovation from FN, and falling head over heels with the CZ platform (and Dan Wesson by extension).

I don't think the Discretion is a direct replacement for the FNX45T by any means. However it's a very high quality suppressor host that I really enjoy shooting and so far runs just fine for me.

I actually prefer the HK45T that I picked up to directly replace the FNXT, and between that and the SP-01 threaded... and the Discretion... and the Scorpion... i've got enough hosts for my Octane to keep it happy :)

Who the hell runs a 24lb recoil spring in anything. That's crazy.
