  • Yeah, go ahead. Break into my house!
To folks living in the subject vicinity:  where do you shoot?  And just as important, where don't you shoot?  I want to start shooting, regularly, again, after a (too) long hiatus. There seems to be a lack of good facilities that I can find.  One nearby indoor range requires that all the ammo is purchased from them - not cheap, but I do see their point in ensuring a minimum of lead in thier air supply.  The economical place I found near Winchester VA ("The Cove") takes a toll on the car just to get to the range (a  set of ruts vs a road) but the price is right.

So - are any folks from this area out there, and where do you recommend to shoot  and to stay away from?  I'd also like to find folks to shoot with.

Thanks

Howdy Hayfield123.

I live in MD now but am in the middle of a move to Louisa, VA, so your answers would also interest me.

I've never shot there, but how about the Clark Bros range on Rt-15/29/17?

I'm currently the Chief Range Safety Officer for Quantico Shooting Club and you might check into membership and/or matches there. We have trap/skeet, long range and some carbine/handgun opportunities.

Summit Point is another spot you might look into. The three-gun program we had at Quantico has moved over there and is MUCH improved.

You might also go poke around AR-15.Com and ask around. It's not bad if you don't take it too seriously, and they have "Hometown Forums" for the various states. The Virginia/West Virginia forum is pretty active.
The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Thanks, E.shell.  I'll research Summit Point and Clark Bros.  Quantico is a long drive, but if I can't find anything else, I may look into it.

+1 for Clark Brothers. Been 11 years since I lived in Va, but I shot there fairly regularly from '80 to '99.

Just looked it up - its a 90 mile drive.  I can't believe I can't find someplace close to home!  I wish back to the days when I was a kid and I could strap my .22 to my handlebars and shoot at just about any field I rode to . . . without a thousand calls to 911 about shots being heard!

We had a free range, not far from Martinsburg - but thanks to some clowns mounting their targets ON TOP of the berms, and hitting someone's home, five miles down range, the state closed it to all but shotguns!

I may have to drive that far!

I've got a lot of the same issues in IL. There are plenty of indoor ranges around the NW Suburbs but its a drive from hell to get to any long range facilities suitable for rifles.
CZ 75 SP01 Shadow, strong enough for a man, but she likes it too!

Have you tried doing a google search for "Shooting ranges in West Virginia" or similar?

Regularly!  But I'd also like to meet some fellow shooters in the area - and to benefit from their advice and experience.  If someone has been to a range and has a problem with it, it would be good to know - like the state range that closed because folks were putting targets on top of the berms . . . that kind of person is also liable to be sucking down the beer while he shoots - and I want to be far from that place and that kind of shooter!

Have you tried asking around a couple of LGS?

All depends where you live in Northern Virginia and I can provide you with some choices…

Indoor pistol range, I recommend SharpShooters Small Arms Range in Lorton.

Outdoor pistol, rifle, shotgun, I recommend Quantico Shooting Club.  Check out the new website and go to the calendar page.  Lots of upcoming matches for 2011.  Rec fire is posted by Thursday of the week and hope to post sooner…it has to do with range control and the Marines use…you cant go wrong and for $100 you wont find anything else close to that deal.

Lastly, NRA range in Fairfax is also a choice.

Hope that helps

+1 on NRA HQ range, but that's pretty far for you. Others that are a bit of a drive but worth it are Cresap Rifle Club in Frederick, MD (Sat/Sun only, 10/25/50/100 yds, prices going up but still cheap and very safe), and Green Ridge State Forest just past Hancock, MD off Rte. 68- That's a weekend trip for me, but they have camping close to the range and it's $25/yr to shoot there- 100 yds rifle and ~20yds pistol. You have to shoot rifles through big funky tubes for sound control though and there is no RSO.
