My budget build 3gun CZ712
« on: June 12, 2011, 02:47:33 PM »
Hey Guys thought I would do a little write up of the mods I did to my CZ712 utility to get ready for some 3 gun and other types of competition.

Stock the day I picked it up.

Starting disassembly.

Installing the Hi-Viz Tombuster sights for sighting slugs.

Installed a Nordic Components Benelli Nova extension. Right now its 7+1 but with the Nordic 3/4 end cap added to this extension it will be 8+1.

Back together painted and some texture added along with a better grind to fit recoil pad.

Then I had a friend machine me a extended bolt handle.

Heres the stock one next to one Stainless steel and one Titanium.

Heres another Aluminum he made. I got to shoot with the Alum one worked great the others needed some tweaking still

Heres all of them starting with stock so you can get an idea of size. The ti and ss look the same.

Next weekend I plan on taking a video of it in action. I shot it yesterday on one stage and it fired 26 rds of the Federal ammo from Walmart without a problem.

Let me know what you guys think maybe some other small mods I could do.  Thanks

I picked up a couple more goodies for the 712.

Got the Nordic 3/4 ext cap so now it can be made 8+1 very easily.

Also got a bright red follower.

Also picked up the custom bolt handles and weighed them.

Stock- 9 grams
Alum.- 7 grams
Ti- 9 grams
SS- 17 grams

Right now I have been using the alum hook style one. Im happy with it but my friend is going to make a titanium hook one. I want something a little more durable.

Next weekend I hope to test the others and get some video. Then I will decide which ones I will keep.

CJ - that hook style looks pretty good, probably a little easier to get to versus the round knurled one as well. Is that red follower a benelli follower? Must say it's coming along nicely, thanks for posting all of the pics. Just got my extended tube, choke, sights, etc and I've done some light stippling just to get a better grip going...

I used this follower. It was on clearance last week for 9 bucks.

Suesstech which choke do you plan on using? Not the stock ones?

CJ,
Sorry had notifications off for this site. I'm using a Carlson's LM choke ( http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=854644 ). Going to start with LM and see where that takes me. Thanks for the info on the follower. I'm going to try to get everything on mine this weekend and will post some pics. I just finished some stippling on the grip and forend to eliminate any slipping. That stock plastic is as slippery as hot butter...

Here's the 712 in action. Don't blame the shotgun for my bad shooting.

Hey CJBrian,
Thanks for sharing. Good shooting. Your thread has coaxed me to order a 712 for 3gun. I too, will be making similar upgrades that you have made (ie. sights, etc). Anything you would do different?
BTW: What handgun were you using in Stage 1? Thanks in advance for any reply. cheaha bill

No im very happy how the 712 came out. As of now I wouldn't change anything. I found some cheap ammo it likes and I just need to get some practice with it and loading.

I use a CZ 75B stock except a Hogue grip and schmeky trigger kit.

How much do you think you have in this?  Do you think these mods could be done by someone with little to no gunsmithing experience?

Yes most of the mods were bolt ons. Except the cutting of the magazine tube which was easy and the machining of the custom bolt handles which were done by a friend and install like the stock handle.

Heres a price list of the mods.

Dave's Metal Works follower- $9.86 (Midway)
Nordic 3 rd extension -$74.99 (Midway)
Nordic 3/4 extension- $14.99 (Midway)
Hi-Viz sight- $24.99 (Midway)
Pachmayr recoil pad $35.00 (local gun store)
Krylon Fusion paint $cant remember (walmart)
Custom bolt handles $trade (friend)

I found its better to wait and order the parts all at once from MidwayUSA and use the discount coupons they email out.

Hope that helps.
