Witness 9mm/22 first impressions
« on: May 31, 2011, 01:52:47 PM »
Took my new Witness 9mm/22LR to the sandpit over the weekend. I was able to stretch and file a set of CZ75 Hogue grips to make them fit. I'm very glad that I was successful at this, because the included hard plastic grips are very unappealing. My first impressions are as follows:

Pros:

    All steel
    High quality construction
    Nice trigger
    Accurate
    Includes .22 kit
Nice sights on both slides (3 dot combat style on 9mm, adjustable target type on .22)
    Several caliber kits available
    Low price ($400 from Bud's)

Cons:

    Easily scratched black finish
Ships with cheapo/ugly grips, and replacing them is difficult
Drawbacks of a small scale mfr/importer--part/mag availability, etc.

Conclusion:

    Excellent deal. Highly recommended.

Shot very well. As I said, it was accurate, and the trigger was very decent. Only fired maybe 50 rounds of 9mm and it never skipped a beat (Cheap walmart UMC 250 pack). The first mag with the .22 kit wasn't cycling, so I sprayed the rails with some remoil. It ran like a champ after that for another 50 rounds or so.

Nice set-up
Good job on the Hogues, they ARE a real bear to put on
If you're going to shoot the .22lr Conversion a lot, think on this
Get and keep a Hoppe's BoreSnake available
The .22lr tend to get a bit crudded-up, and running the BoreSnake though every couple hundred rounds will keep in runnig without hanging-up
Be safe, Shoot safe, Den S

Thanks for the advice. I have one around somewhere, but if I can't find it, I'll pick up another.

Thanks for the review.

I've been looking at picking up one of these combos and I have some friends that are new to shooting that could use one.

What is the 22 magazine availability looking like?

From what I've seen, mags arent exactly commonplace, but you can order them from midway with minimum hassle.

Ahh, so you were able to get the Hogues on.  I have the exact same setup that you do (9mm/.22) and have been putting off replacing the cruddy original grips with the Hogue.  I just have the slip on for the time being.

I love the gun, but am having 2 issues:

Cycling problems with both slides (stovepipeing)

Shooting low and right with the 9mm.

I don't get out to the range too often, so I can't say for sure if it's operator error or not, but I've never had a cycling or low right problem with my other 9mm.

Maybe I'm not lubing it enough?

Yeah, I'd suggest giving the rails a once-over with some remoil with teflon or the all teflon dry lube and running it. I had no issues with the 9mm slide shooting it dry right from the box. The .22 slide benefited immensely from the lubrication.

My LGS ran a group buy on these at $370 so I picked one up and it will be here July 15th.
They are offering spare 9mm mags to go with the deal at $19/each but they've been unable to source the 22LR mags yet.
Are the 22LR mags difficult to obtain or can I just call EAA and order them directly from them?
