CZ 97B vs 1911
« on: April 18, 2012, 04:32:52 PM »
I have a question for all of you who shoot and handeled bouth of the guns ,97b and 1911 , how do this to compare in terms of accuracy , handeling ,and reliability ? I can own only 2 guns (this is the law here ) ,one is 75b 9mm and I whant something in 45 acp . We don't have a market for guns here because very few people can own them so I can probably get a S&W 1911 or a Tanfoglio for a decent price ($ 1200-1400 ) , the CZ would be around $ 700-800 , but let's say price is not important , what are your opinions about this ,and please forget for a few minutes that this is the CZ forum :P

If I could only have 2 handguns it would be a 9mm 75b and a 45acp 1911.

The 1911 can be modified with a large variety of aftermarket parts, there are caliber conversions so you could shoot everything from 22lr to 10mm, and you can even swap out the slide and convert to a rifle. The 97 is a great gun but it is a one-trick-pony.

They handle differently, but I would give the advantage to the 1911. The weight of the 97 soaks up a little more recoil but the 1911 can easily be managed with some practice. That additional weight never goes away either - the 97 is a heavy gun. The 1911 grip can go from very thin to fat, the mainspring housing can be swapped out for a better grip feel. The 1911 trigger can be anything you want. The 1911 suffers from a reputation of poor reliability and some of that is justified. It is a design that benefits from quality experienced gunsmithing and suffers from too many would-be amateurs blaming their failures and lack of experience on the design.

FYI the S&W design has an external extractor that some 1911 snobs don't like, but it works great. I have owned 3 SWs and my favorite carry 1911 piece is the alloy frame PD model.  It has never had a failure in 3000+ rounds.

My vote is for the 1911. It points well, and shoots well.

Everyone should at least one good 1911.  100 years old and going stronger than ever.  My vote goes to the 1911 as well.

Second on the S&W 1911s and external extractor. Zero failures from day one with a fresh from the factory, stock, alloy, commander size, ambi PD.  Trigger fit was poor, but that was a cheap fix; I understand that deficiency has been fixed in the new E-series guns.

Have you considered the Tanfoglio Standard/Combat in .45 ACP?  (AKA .45 EAA Witness in the USA)  ???

If you want mainly a Single Action style Pistol, go 1911.  If you want DA/SA Trigger options go CZ97B or Tanfoglio Standard/Combat.  The thing is, the CZ97B and Tanfoglio Standard/Combat will operate much the same as your CZ75 and that may make some training difference in getting used to the different Manual of Arms for both handguns.

I do have both a Colt 1911 and a couple of all Steel .45 Witnesses (Tanfoglio Standard/Combat) and I can use either, but I have more shooting time on the Witnesses.  I typically carry Hammer down/safety off on a full chamber with most all of my handguns, but the 1911 is a cocked and locked carry gun which is also an option for your CZ75.  Pick one style of carry for whatever platform you use and train with it.

There are no options here on the stile of carry . The law here is that you have to carry a gun with an empty chamber ,and that is for duty gun allso ,  so it does not metter because you have to do the same thing to shoot . And another thing , we don't shoot people here so much , 99% of police officers never shot even once their gun outside the range , and even if someone attacks you you have to shoot to the legs .
I had for a short time a 1911 gun if you can call a Para Ordonace P14 a 1911 . It is bigger then the standard 1911 but that wasan't a problem ,the problem was that I got it used , and I think it was used by some stupid monkeys by the shape that the gun came to me . I have orderd some parts for it ,springs ,and stuff from US but it was very hard , the gun was ok by the time I changed the parts and shoot well but my love for it was gone so I sold it .

I would also suggest a 1911. The parts may be hard to come by where you live but they are available from the smallest spring to a new slide or barrel.
I've ordered a 97B but I already have 3 1911's, two in .45 and one in 9mm. I also have a CZ75SPO1 which I love and that's the reason I bought the 97B.
The S&W .45 has a different extractor and it works well. It's not as fragile as the Colt extractor and can be replaced easily without special tools. The Colt extractor has to be bent just right for it to be perfectly reliable. But I've never had any problems with the Colt extractor either.

Good Luck in your choice

What god-forsaken country are you from with those silly laws?  I love my CZ's, but my nod here would go to the 1911.  But if I were in your shoes, I would opt for another weapon system in 9mm to to standarize your ammunition selection.

I too like 1911's have had my fair share of'em through the yrs. They are great handguns and as stated 100 yrs is a hard recorded to beat. I know I will catch some flack but the 97 B has bit me hard. I know they are built a tank, and maybe that is what draws me to them. As well as being able to double/single action and vice versa function and locked cocked carry 97B is hard to beat. (&B big try carrying a .50 Desert Eagle concealed. I have and yes it can be done and with comfort to beat. Yes I still love the 1911's be crazy not to.

I've never shot a CZ 97B, so I can't comment on it. However, I bought my first 1911 a week ago and have fallen in love! It points and feels as good as any gun I've ever shot. I'm a BIG fan of the full-size and compact CZ 75 family and they are still my favorite, but the 1911 is an amazing gun, I LOVE mine.

Winny my friend I'm from Romania , but this kind of stupid laws are everywhere around Europe . I know the ameicans can't belive this stupid laws , that's why you should fight to keep your gun rights so you whont end up with this kind of laws .
What you are saying about standardizing the ammo is a good ideea ,allso taking in consideration that 45 ammo is hard to find here and is not cheep ($30 Plus for a 50 cartrige box) but i whant a gun in 45 ACP .

I do not have a 97B (never found one to try) But I do have a IMI baby eagle (CZ clone)  in .45 and a S&W 1911sc also in .45 .
shooting them I find I love shooting the 1911 better, I know it makes little sense but the 1911 just feels great. That being said most of my friends who shoot both are much more accurate with the baby eagle.

If I wanted to have higher ammo capacity and a go-to tank of a gun I am grabbing the baby eagle , I am just more accurate with it for soome reason.
If I am heading to the range for some good fun I think a good 1911 will always be hard to beat as they just make you smile.

I have never had a problem with either firearm, both have worked well.
1911 is just a great fit and is single stack skinny, fantastic trigger.
Baby Eagle is fatter, heavier, trigger is gritty but should smooth out.

You do know in the end you will need both.

welcome,

the guns i have can be different. i have 2 97s.  1 can be picky, the other not so when it comes to HP ammo.  Ball isnt an issue.  1 97 has a mag issue that can be fixed.  accuracry can be better than some OTS 1911s.  Dont know about S&W 1911s or Tangfoglio 1911s.  I have Colt, PO and some Kimber 1911s.  couple of the Colts shoot way better then i can and i think are better then the CZs.  1 colt is a National Match, the other one someone else put $$$ into it to make it nice and accurate.  1 of the Kimbers is accurate OTS.  Reliabilty OTS for 1911s can be a iffy imo/ime.   Handling a 1911 is like any other 1911 unless its a widebody.  i do have a couple PO 1911 widebodies too.  They arent as accurate, imo, but are fun to shoot since they hold more ammo.

if you know what you want out of the guns, then maybe that will help.  afa as $$$ is concerned, thats usually THE major issue.  700+ difference isnt something to ignore.  that would be ALOT of ammo/practice overhere or even the cost of another toy!

Thank you for your comments . I wonder how S&W 1911 ( standard ones not the Performance Center) are compared to other popular 1911 ,Colt , Kimber ...
