CZ 527 Varmint Target in .223 OK for Coyote?
« on: December 21, 2012, 08:05:47 PM »
I'm interested in learning coyote hunting from a local guy and was wondering if the new CZ 527 Varmint Target in .223 Rem would be a good choice?  Any input appreciated.  I'll likely mostly be shooting from less than 300 yards.  Thanks!

foxmoorcz:   I Shoot a CZ 527 HD VARMINT. Mine has a Kevlar stock with the palm swells on both sides of the stock.  I use mine as a Varmint Rifle, and I think it is a fantastic Coyote rifle. Mine has a 1& 9 twist but I use mostly 52 gr A-MAX`s, they will shoot 1/2 inch at a 100 yds. With the set trigger & the 6-24X40 4200 ELITE I have on mine a Coyote at 300 yds standing still very long, will be going home with me, if I do my part. I use Cross Sticks or a Bi-Pod now, to old for long Off Hand shots. This rifle is a great PD, Ground Hog, rifle also, I have taken all of these well past 300 yds if I do my part. My CZ 223 HD Varminter is just a fantastic rifle, and it is a joy to own and a real pleasure to shoot. IMHO you have made a great choice and I don`t belive you could find a better rifle the learn to Coyote Hunt with. My Son and I have several CZ Rifles and they are all just great never a problem with any of them. GOOD LUCK TO YOU:

Yep, they don't have "Varmint" in their name for no good reason.  I have (2) and love them both.  Try the 55gr Nosler Varmagedons.  You'll be happy you did.

Good luck & Happy New Year.

viking499:   I have had my CZ 527 Varmint 223 for several years. Like I said, the stock black with what looks like gray spider webbing on it. It has palm swells on both side, and and the forend is flat on the bottom. I bought it used at Gander Mountain like always I can`t afford new stuff. But this rifle is one of my favorites. I would probabley think this is and older Kevlar Stock. Because I bought it used and I have had it for several years. I hope this helps you out.

Thanks Ken.  I just saw a pic of the new Kevlar style stock.  Not sure if I like it or not.  Just curious if you had the new or old style.

That rifle is on my short short list, but just got bumped due to me finding another 6.5x55. ;D ;D

All my CZ's shoot good too.  I would expect nothing less out of a CZ.

I hope you have talked with your friend about what style of coyote hunting you will do.  The reasoning is that if you will be stationary, than the varmint gun is an excellent choice.  If you will be doing a lot of walking the standard 527 would be a better choice.

Yes, we'll be shooting stationary from elevated platforms, as it's very flat in our area.  The Varmint Target is not a light gun, so you're right, it's the proper rifle for this use but not for lugging all over creation.
