cz 550 6.5x55
« on: February 04, 2014, 01:37:06 PM »
I'm looking at a 550 FS for white tail in the north east where there is lots of brush. I am wondering if this cartridge is suitable for shots that would be in the 50 yard range or is over kill. I like the round in a FS euro design. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

No overkill, it is a great round.  One of the best rounds I have ever shot.  I do not have a CZ in 6.5, but I do have a 2 Tikka's in the swede.

Thanks Viking. I have heard the tikka's are pretty smooth too.

The one I'm looking at has such a nice stock. I'm actually worried about messing it up in the woods.

Don't get me wrong.  I would take a CZ FS 6.5 in a heartbeat.  Would like to find one in person with nice wood.  I have never handled a full size FS.

When I was stationed in Germany that was a commonly used cartridge under similar shooting conditions at my landlord's hunt club.

Only thing to watch out for is that most of the 139gr bullets (being quite hard) can punch straight through the chest area on a smaller animal. A past hunting mate of mine had that happen with a red spiker and changed back to his 30-30 for close bush work. The 120-131gr and round/flat nose 156-160gr bullets apparently open up more quickly, as might the Norma 139gr Vulkan bullet (originally PPC).
A good shot at close range beats a 'hit' at a longer range.

Went back to the lgs. The 6.5x55 is still there but not as pretty as I remembered. I let it stay for now. There is a pretty .222 lux there for a good price but I didn't commit to it either.

For what it's worth, the 527 Lux in Triple Deuce was discontinued last year, and the writing appears to be on the wall for the non-magnum 550 models as the new 557s are phased in.   I'm not saying you'll never be able to find either of these guns again, but as the likelihood of finding them new on the rack dwindles, the prices may go the other direction.

I hear ya on the 550s. I think cz gettin rid of those is a big mistake. I did pick up (as in hold) a 557. Their nice but...not mauser action/controlled feed. I think the 527 lux is still available in .222 configuration though.

I only have a couple 6.5's right now, but always looking for another one. ;D

I really like the capabilities of the 6.5.  And I like the "oddball" calibers too.........
