Progressive rate Recoil Springs?
« on: November 21, 2016, 05:04:00 PM »
Scmecky,  have you ever considered marketting CZ 75 "progressive" recoil springs?
Say 10#/11# increasing to 12#/13# equivalent spring weights?

Some years back, I had one made for a Hi-Power pistol than ran really well in a 75B.

Great idea 1SOW. I figure that with induction coil heat treating one might temper the spring at different rates to achieve different hardnesses along the length of the coil. Is that how you had one made?

In motorcycles, the springs are wound with the coils spaced differently.

I'll be interested to hear what David thinks, because in the application I'm familiar with they're a compromise to the correct spring.
I had the right to remain silent...

but not the ability.

1SOW,

I am familiar with progressive rate springs.  We have thought about this in the past, and I can see some real benefits to how the slide mass could be made to accelerate quickly (low rate), then slow down quickly (higher rate) as the slide reached the frames abutment.  This could possibly mean a softer recoil impulse and perhaps better slide stop life.

I might hit up one of the spring engineers we consult with in 2017 and ask.  Right now we are working on some other new stuff we are trying to complete before years end.

David thanks for replying.
What you said about the slide is exactly what I was thinking about:  fast initial compression and slowing down after extraction,  followed by a strong initial feed
It seems a win-win proposition,  especially for minor power factor Production  Class shooters.

The one I used changed coil spacing progressively if memory serves..

Glad you have a "full plate" especially at Thanksgiving.  :)8)

1SOW asked a good question and I was pleased to see good comments and a good answer.  I have seen variable power springs do well in .45 ACP tools (non-CZ pistols) that I have fired when loads needed to be tuned for reasons anyway (but I did not want to open a can of worms, so to speak).  Some guys need to have fired cases extract regardless of spring or load.

I'm no springnologist, but I don't think it will work!

Let your car start rolling down the hill, then try to stop it! Once it develops some momentum, it takes a lot of force or distance to slow it down. Not much to work with on a pistol! O0

The Browning HP offers one that fits CZ 75s.  Wolf used to carry them.  I haven't checked in a long time.
I had one that was too strong for my mouse gas loads at that time.  A shooter friend with a HP needed it,  so I gave it to him.

Why don't you get one and let us know if your car CZ likes it. O0

I run a DPM  recoil system in most of my pistols, similar to what h& k uses in the USP.
