Seeking DW opinions
« on: December 10, 2016, 11:29:00 AM »
So, next year I'm thinking about acquiring a DW 1911 and am seeking opinions from DW owners. Intent would be general use and perhaps some USPSA and IDPA games.

I'm drawn to the specialist due to the attributes. This wouldn't be my first 1911. Currently have a SIG nightmare fastback; previously owned a colt stainless and Springfield RO.

Any recommendations / comments as to finish, other models to consider, etc.

Thanks in advance

I shoot a PM9 and it is great. Gun is very well fit,  very accurate.
I have pretty switched to 9mm , even though its minor in USPSA.

I've got the Specialist in 45 with duty coat.  Beautiful gun and I found a steal of a deal on it on GB.  I had to order the specific holster from bladetech since the few others I tried didn't fit.  I put on a kensight adj rear and Dawson front fiber.

In hindsight, I'd look for the PM9 or SSC in 40.  I prefer the adjustable rear sight and fiber front for USPSA.  Holsters would be easier to find too. Keeping the same load as my limited gun would have been convenient and slightly cheaper.

If you want a deal on a Specialist in 45, I know a guy...  ;o)

PM9 would be a great choice.

I'd suggest a Pointman 38 (38Super) first and a PM9 second for competition use. For general range and defensive use a Specialist or if you don't like railed 1911s a Valor. DW's Duty Coat finish is tough stuff and looks really nice.

Thanks all. Another Q- after looking at some YouTube vids, it appeared that the stainless specialists had black extractor, seen from the back near the hammer. Did I see it correctly or misinterpret what I saw?

The stainless DWs generally have blued extractors because DW likes the properties of the metal better for extractor operation than a stainless extractor.  I have a duty treat specialist and it is phenomenal.  I also have a 9mm ECO (excellent weapon) and I had a heritage .45 that I gave to my daughter that is also excellent.  None of them was perfect out of the gate.  They all took a bit of work to get just how we wanted them but I love DWs.  They are of phenomenal quality and a great value.

I have an Eco in 45, Vbob in 45 and a Pointman 9.  The 2 45's ran perfect from day one.  The Pointman has had some hiccups.  I think they are all worked out now, but the mags and gun needed about 700 rounds of break-in time. Overall DW makes an excellent firearm.

I have a duty treat specialist in .45. I had have the extractor tension adjusted but what a great shooter. Makes my look good. I wouldn't consider any other manufacturer. Either to expensive or to cheaply made.

Can't comment for competition use but I've got a Valor and it's a fantastic pistol.  Very slick in operation and feels extremely well made.  WAAAAY more accurate than I am given what a couple friends have done with it on the range.

I also recommend a PM9. I love mine. I use it for IDPA/USPSA
