GSG STG 44 22lr clone - any experiences?
« on: January 26, 2017, 11:20:04 AM »
Ladies and gentlemen, through a VERY unfortunate turn of events I really need to get my son something nice to make up for a massive bonehead on my part. He is a WWII nut and loves the STG 44, which, unfortunately, I couldn't afford to rent 10 minutes on a real one for him. However, the 22lr clone seems to be available and not really all that expensive, if I work an OT or two to get the cash. So, does anyone here have experience with one? I just want the rifle and at least one spare mag, don't need the fancy wood case, (though that would trip his trigger as well, pun intended), but I want to see if I'm wasting my money on a hard to care for jamamatic. Thoughts, please?

I don't have firing experience, but the one I handled in a gun store seemed very nice. CDNN frequently offers sale prices on them in their daily email.

Mine worked well but was heavy. Had to raise the rear sight.
There is a sub forum on ar15.com for these.

They have a pretty good deal right now including the case.

Looked at Arf, didn't find it, but they have about 10,000 subforums anyway. :)
I keep hearing they are wicked heavy...that might be an issue.

ATI says 9.4 lbs. The Gunblast video says 9lbs 15.5 oz.

Heavy indeed.

CDNN lists them at 9.99 pounds. Ouch. My BREN 805 is a pound and half lighter than that.
Other czoice right now might be the CZ 512 Tactical, which isn't historically accurate to any service rifle, but looks cool, is a 22lr, and semi auto. And it's six and a half pounds....

To me the weight is a plus, it's just one more way the ATI mimics the original.  I think the .22 MP-44 is just plain the coolest .22lr rifle being made these days.  The one I shot was accurate and reliable with the ammunition we were shooting (CCI Mini Mags), but that's the only load we shot that day.  And if I'm being 100% honest, I have found Mini Mags to be an outstanding .22lr load.  They tend to function in most anything and are typically the most accurate of the high velocity .22lr's.

Honestly if I had the money, I'd snatch up a .22LR MP-44.  They also have the .22lr MP-40 with fake suppressor, but I was never an MP-40 fan, and to me it's just not nearly as cool as the MP-44.  Now if they come up with a .22lr FG-42...well then, I'll be listing body parts on ebay.

I had an ATI GSG5 that I really regret selling. If ATI has done the same quality build with STG, it should shoot any 22 ammo reliably. Was kind of a pain to clean with smaller parts. The ATI 1911 was also just as reliable (another regretted sale). Just saying that in my limited experience, they put out reliable products, that did not seem to picky about what ammo they were fed.

Grabagun has it for 500 on their clearance page. Pricier than I thought it would be.

Just handled one in my LGS. Heavy, but intentionally so to match the original. If fitted with a sling, it wouldn't be a problem. Comes in a crate. Priced at $569. They also had the GSG replica MP40 for $529. Both with one mag. They look like a hoot to shoot.

He saw it, was given the choice between it and a CZ 512 Tactical...no contest, so now I have to find an STG44 clone....
