SP-01 or Beretta 92FS
« on: January 27, 2017, 04:09:00 PM »
Hello All,

In a couple months I'll be in the market for a new gun.  I already own several CZs and love them.  I am thinking of either a Beretta 92FS or a SP-01.  Main purpose for either will be for the range.  Which one and why?

Thanks all for the feedback.

Has to be personal preference IMO. Both are great, but the Beretta is way too big for my hands so I struggle to shoot it well. However, if you already have several CZs and the size of the Beretta isn't a problem, get a Beretta. It's a classic.

Whichever one fits your hand better.

In my case, SP-01 FTW. The SP-01 Tactical .40 is one of my absolute favorite pistols.

CZ all day. The SP-01 is the finest full size steel handgun on the market in my opinion. I had no budget and I ended up with a SP-01 and PCR after trying just about everything..

I tried a Beretta 96, sold it and got a P-06. Suits me way better. My impression is that the beretta is more complex with safety decocker set up, and trigger wasn't as nice as CZ. Beretta is a fine weapon, I just shoot CZ better. Now if CZ made a Tomcat 3032 equivalent, I'd be all over it.

I've shot and qual'd with the Beretta,  but in my hands it feels clumsy and heavy.  That pistol will shoot,  but handling doesn't compare with the full size CZ 9mm.

Yea, try them both on for size, if at all possible try firing each.
I own both as well as a Taurus model 99 (Beretta clone with adj sights).
the Sp-01 wins for me, fits like a glove (not OJ's glove) and is as accurate as I can be on any given day.

IMO I'd say the CZ. I had a very nice stainless 92fs that I traded for a G19 gen 4. The G19 grip fit better and I have large hands. Now I have  a CZ and CZ clone and the G19 is going up for sale soon to fund another CZ. The Beretta while nice has a larger grip so for me the CZ is better and I like the controls better too.

If your going for the 92fs to try something new just make sure it fits your hand good and shoot one if possible. You might like it but it wasn't for me.

Good luck.

I own both and I honestly like the overall feel of the SP-01 more. Has some nice weight to it and feels right in your hand. Looks very sleek too.

CZ

I own a WC Brigadier tact and its accurate and smooth but the SA trigger sits to far back and the grip is really fat and wide. I have medium/large hands. On the plus side, the action stays much cleaner than the CZ, making cleaning a breeze. I have since put the WC slim G10 grips on the firearm but even then, it doesnt feel as good as the CZ. They also hold less. Std configuration your looking at 15 rounds with an optional 17 round (sticks out a bit). You can extend the mag's using P229 aluminum base plates (+3) from trt tactical BUT you have to use mag bodies that do NOT have the detents on the bottom. The stock magazine bodies can work but you need to take some material off the top of the baseplate in order for the magazine to engage the catch.

Both excellent, I think the CZ is a better shooter, far better stock trigger, but I use the Beretta with kids, I like the decocker feature and the long DA for starting out.

The only 2 that would make me stop and really consider not buying a SP01 would be the M9A3 (I dare you to find a smoother racking slide on a combat pistol) or the Wilson BrigTac.

Never shot the SP01 but my Matte Stainless is my most accurate double stack pistol.  On its heals, however is the Beretta 96A1 in .40S&W which has a much better trigger reset.  It is a keeper and more versatile, since a simple barrel swap allows for shooting 9mm at the range.  I take it a step further and keep the 9mm barrel with its own locking block and use dedicated 9mm mags of a stainless variety for a sort of color code.

Lurking the Beretta forum recently I discovered a G conversion for the FS now exists (decock only, no safety).  I don't need it; the only thing I changed on the 96A1 is the hammer spring to the "D" spring.  What really surprised me is my sister (small hands) couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with my prized CZ75 Matte Stainless, but she.rang the gong with ease using the 96A1 in .40.   Go figure!

I helped a buddy purchase a used 92fs. It is a classic and John Riggs used one, feels great and all that. It just doesn't shoot as well as a CZ 75 SP01. If I was a betting man I would bet that in the hands of the same shooter, shooting booth guns under the same conditions, the sp01 would win.

I know this is an old thread but I literally just bought an SP-01 tactical and the other gun I was looking at was a Beretta M9. I chose the SP-01 because I prefer CZs and their decocker design. I like the design of the CZ more and I shoot them better. I was tempted to get the M9 because I shoot them for the military and figured it would be nice to own one at home. However, I feel the DA/SA work I do with my CZs has been adequate cross-training for when I qual etc with the Beretta. Beretta are cool, just not CZ cool.
