I will say the Hi Point is known for it's cheapness, blow back operation, (hence the enormous slide), single stack mags and lack of ANYTHING to make them any thing other than what they are - the cheapest new handgun on the market today. People on extremely limited incomes buy them, like the old Raven 25 ACp pistols I saw for sale for $49.99 back in the day. IT was what people could afford. I carried a Jennings J-22 WAY back in the day, because it was all I could afford.
I wouldn't carry a Hi Point if I had an alternative that I trusted, but remember, Hi Point offers a lifetime warranty. They wouldn't do that if they were complete trash, as they'd go broke replacing all the guns over and over.
