Loose Sear Cage - An Alternate Fix
« on: June 27, 2017, 08:08:14 PM »
Replaced the sear on my pre-B and encountered some inconsistent sear disengagement.
Studying the action with the slide removed a lot of sear cage movement was apparent.
Measuring with a feeler gauge between the cage and frame showed a gap of .020"+.
Euereka moment. Shim it there.
Looking for some shim material, I found a very old and tiny Kastar feeler gauge set.
Removed the .020" gauge:

Used a Dremel cutoff wheel to trim it to fit. Lucky me, width was perfect!

Enlarge the hole with a #20 drill so the shim can be retained by the safety shaft, then deburr:

Held in place with Assemblee Goo (used for automatic transmission repair)

Reinstall sear cage and safety. Worst part of it was dealing with that awful safety detent.

Why choose this method over using an oversized hammer pin retaining peg(#19)?

Uh oh.  Not again?  ;)  A smart and simple fix.
Really looks good for the side-to-side sear movement.  Does it leave a little room to insure clearance?  How does the trigger pull and break feel now?
Very interested as I plan to work on the front-to-rear movement before long.  My 75 Shadow has the shim for the CGW adj. sear and it still moves laterally noticeably.

Studying it, seemed that tightening at the rear corner might cock the cage somewhat diagonally. This fix keeps everything in alignment.
Plus, it was done with stuff already on hand.

Like.  Have you shot it,  and did the trigger pull and break improve?
Thanks.

More than one way to skin a cat, as folks older than me were fond of saying.

I thought the idea of using the small piece of drill bit shaft at the left rear corner was good, too.  But you're right, there can be movement in more than one direction and it can cause issues in one pistol that may not appear in another.  Different fixes depending on how the parts/pieces align and go together.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Did the job Tuesday PM.
Hope to make it to the club for a test session.
Another advantage (for me) of this method is that it eliminates trial and error fitting.
Measure, fabricate install.

Just back from the club.
Tested the gun with 6 different loads.
Everything ran perfectly.
I pronounce this one fixed.

I had seen the sear cage shimmed a few times but it was always more make bleep and less permanent. This required that you reset the shim if the sear cage was removed again.

This form of shimming appears to be better. I like that the shim is mechanically stabilized by the safety shaft. An interesting idea. Thank you for the post and the pics.
Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

I've done this modification to most of my older cz's using a feeler gauge set for the shim material.  The set allowed me to use the correct thickness based on how loose the sear cage was.  I believe a member, Double Pedro? came up with this mod around 10 years ago.

I am using an oversized hammer pin retaining .
The sear cage rests on it and no issue there for the last 2 years
and 2 back springs

Isn't that an oe fix in the shadow or something like that? I recall reading about it but forgot what cz's came like that.
