Weird "burr" on spent reloaded case
« on: July 12, 2017, 01:57:17 PM »
I'm noticing a weird burr or marking on the mouth of the spent case on my 9mm reloads. Is this something to be concerned about? Or, is this normal? Case ejects fine, accuracy is good (for what I can shoot), and nothing alarming on how it shoots compared to factory.

I used the following setup:
CZ75 SP-01 with CGW Pro Package
13# recoil spring
OAL 1.1375"
HP38 4.24 gr
Winchester WSP

We would need a pic or a very detailed description of the "burr" to give an opinion.
Pictures are good.

weird, my mistake on incorrectly posting a picture. let's try this again.

it's not like the lip of the mouth rolled over. it's like a small <0.25" file was rubbed on the mouth of the case.

Have you checked if the feed ramp and hood are smooth?
If I had known how much better being retired is than working I would have done it FIRST.

I believe the feed ramp and hood are smooth. The feed ramp has never been polished or modified. Not sure what's going on with my reloads as my factory rounds don't appear affected.

Also, made two dummy rounds (case deprimed, with projectile and crimp, no powder) and loaded them into the magazine. Cycled the slide with both cartridges several times, and I cannot detect any marks on the mouth of the case. This is very odd to me

Hand cycling is slow and gentle.
What bullet are you loading to be have different results from factory loads?  Is it a bigger diameter/longer bullet?  What's your measured taper crimp with your reloads vs the factory ammo?  What's the oal of your cartridges vs. factory?
I can "almost" see your slide stop in the background.  It doesn't appear to have the slight reshaping for bigger bullets  to pass unobstructed.

Just looking for a difference between the two cartridges.

I'll try to answer some of your questions now that I can remember. I'll measure the other dimensions when I get home.

What bullet are you loading to be have different results from factory loads? Berry's Preferred Plated 124gr Round Nose. The outer diameter of the base of the bullet is 0.356"
Is it a bigger diameter/longer bullet? I haven't pulled a factory bullet, but I am comparing it to Fiocchi 9mm 115gr FMJ RN cartridges
What's your measured taper crimp with your reloads vs the factory ammo? I forget the factory rounds, but my crimp varies from 0.3785-0.3800 with different head stamp cases.
What's the oal of your cartridges vs. factory? I believe the factory rounds were 1.15xx" long whereas mine were 1.1375"

I also took some photos of the slide stop to share:

Get a Tumblr or imgur account.  Your Google pics still aren't showing up.

Is this a 100% thing?

Does it do it with 100% or your reloads?

Do you have other bullets to try to see if it's your reloads vs your reloads with that bullet?

Have you tried to load it to a different OAL to if that makes it go away?

Is this a 100% thing?  I can't say 100%, but I noticed quite a few of my reloads show this. Haven't noticed it on factory rounds.

Does it do it with 100% or your reloads? I haven't kept track, but will do on the next batch I make.

Do you have other bullets to try to see if it's your reloads vs your reloads with that bullet? Unfortunately, I've only been using Berry's 124gr RN, and don't have any other bullets to test.

Have you tried to load it to a different OAL to if that makes it go away? I haven't tried changing the OAL yet. My pistol accepts and passes plunk test up to 1.154". I'll try 1.14" next as I'd like to see if that help with accuracy, and if it does anything to the spent case.

Sometimes the bullet seating die can do that if the case isn't perfectly aligned.  Have you checked your unshot reloads?

You pluck tested these at 1.154. What OAL are you loading these at?
