I was told this was "Trench Art"

This weekend when we were at home my mom gave me a piece (big) of brass my grandpa brought back from WW1.

It was emptied of projectile and powder and then engraved on both sides.

One side says:  ARMY OF OCCUPATION
                               RHINE
                                1919

The other side says:  S. C. CALE
                            Co B  6 ENGR'S
                      ST MIHIEL    ARGONNE
                                 1918

The headstamp on the bottom of the case (I was told on another forum) says the brass was made in 1917.





Something you don't see every day and it's 100 years old now, too.

I'm trying to decide whether to shine it up, or just leave it with all those years of tarnish on it.

I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

To keep its value, do NOT shine it up. 

To enjoy regardless of monetary value - shine away. :)

I never even took value into consideration since he said it was his grandfather's lol. Just kinda figured he would want to enjoy it. If you it were me, I'd get some nevr-dull and shine it up nice pretty. But that's just me. If you do decide to shine it up OP, please post up some pics. I'd love to see it all it's glory.

There is absolutely NO WAY I would shine it up.  This is a piece of history.  Cleaning it up takes away from that history.

I you ever DID decide to sell it, removing the patina can make it hard to verify the date it was made.  Even if YOU don't decide to sell it, your kids might.

Don't ever sell it - find a quality military museum, preferably something run by the US Army, and have let them display it.
