Just set it in the middle of the shelf in my wife's curio cabinet.

Just like it is in the pictures.

I have a lot of memories of my grandpa (grumpy old guy) but he passed away in 1971 so my kids only know the stories they hear from me or heard from my dad.

I just realized that said Co B 6th Engineers. My grandfather was there in France with the 33rd Engineer Company building hospitals.

I really have to dig through my stuff and find those photos! Only thing I have is an unidentifiable empty cartridge with filed bullet that he turned into a letter opener made from another fired brass hammered absolutely flat and filed.

Amazing piece of your families history. My vote would be to leave it as is. I absolutely love the way aged metal looks and as others have said it would definitely take away from any monetary value the piece has. That being said, if leaving it the way it is means that you don't feel comfortable displaying it then go ahead and clean it up. It deserves to be displayed for all to see and learn from.
