If a barrel isn't marked and I want to know, I do this:

1 Make sure it's unloaded.
2 insert a cleaning rod into the muzzle from the muzzle end
3 put a big enough patch in a patch tip that it will fit tight enough to turn as I pull the patch/tip out
4 pull the rod enough to get the tip/patch started in the bore
5 mark top dead center of the rod with a sharpie (just make a little mark)
6 pull slowly, make sure the rod is turning (due to the patch/tip fit in the bore and the twist of the rifling) and watch for the sharpie mark to come back  around to top dead center
7 stop when the sharpie mark comes back to top dead center
8 measure from the muzzle to the sharpie mark
9 the number of inches is the barrel twist

Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.  So, if you see me walking the dogs with my SIG 556R, its okay.

So you have a 1:12 twist barrel. Congratulations, if it is anything like mine (2013 stamped) it will shoot 50gr and 55gr bullets superbly. That's pretty much what I'd expect from a .223 Varmint rifle. Enjoy!

If it's anything like my 1:12 223 Varmint 40gr and 50gr V-max bullets will group incredibly well. If you want a super fast and destructive varmint bullet a Barnes 36gr Varmint Grenade is a great choice.

My old Rem. M700 Varmint Special (1 turn 12") really like 45 grain Sierra and Hornady bullets.  Very fast, very accurate.

Experiment (if you reload) with different powders.  My rifle really liked IMR4198 (but powder charges have to be weighed since it doesn't meter consistently through a powder measure).  My AR15 varmint rifle does better with H335 and the 45 grain bullets.  Lots of powders will work, you'll just need to figure out which one works best for you.

You may find a factory load that works well in your rifle, or you may find you can make better with a reload of your own.  We built a 24" bull barrel AR15 for my nephew and took it to the range to sight in.  He doesn't reload.  He bought boxes of Remington and Winchester ammo in 50 and 55 grain bullets.  We sighted in at 25 yds. and moved to the 100 yd. range.  He shot more groups to get his POA/POI where he wanted it for 100 yds.

He shot up his store bought ammo and I gave him some of my standard reloads (55 grain Hornady FMJ sitting on top of IMR4198).  When we were done I asked him if he was happy with his groups.  He showed my his targets and told me the best groups were with the reloads I gave him to shoot.  You may be able to seem me grin from here.

If you don't reload, you won't find out what your rifle can really do.
Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.  So, if you see me walking the dogs with my SIG 556R, its okay.
