CZ 75 SP01 vs. SP01 Phantom
« on: September 11, 2017, 11:02:58 PM »
I love my CZ75b but I love to drool! I was looking at the SP01 and SP01 Phantom. The only difference (other than $150) is that the Phantom has a composite frame while the SP01 has the steel frame. I don't quite understand, other than price, why anyone would choose the Phantom. As far as weight, it appears the Phantom is actually a few grams heavier than the steel. Are the triggers different? I love my stock 75b trigger and tend to really dislike plastic triggers, or plastic anything for that matter. Does composite tend to change accuracy? My M&P 9 Shield is not that accurate over 7 yds., but it does have it's finer points too. Believe me, that's hard to admit from a guy who doesn't like plastic and is lost without a hammer! So in others opinion, which would you choose, if money were not an issue?

There's no way the phantom is a few grams heavier than the steel, you must be looking at something else.

Phantom - 29.4 oz
SP-01 - 40.7 oz

Both great, but the standard SP-01 is going to be a bit heavier than both the 75 and the Phantom, which makes it more stable. Weight and carryability  go to the Phantom.

Regardless of others' opinions the fact that you dislike plastic anything should make the decision easy for you.

Unless the lowered weight is important to you, buy the all metal Sp01. They are basically the same pistol otherwise.

Very sound advice unless you like money more then you dislike plastic.
If money were no consideration I would buy the SP-01. If money were a big consideration I would save a little longer and buy the SP-01.
I don't hate the phantom nor do I think it is a bad handgun, it's not. The SP-01 is the better gun IMHO and its worth the buck fifty to boot.

The SP-01 has a weight of 40.7 oz.  The Phanton has a weight of 29.4 oz.  That's almost a can of pop difference between the two!

If you look at the slide of the Phantom, you will notice that it has had material removed to make it lighter.  From the rear slide serrations forward, it has been chamfered.  They carried this over onto the RAMI after they ran out of the slides shaped like the 40B.

Yeah.... get both  ;D

Clearly, that's the only logical choice.  The only way to figure out which one you like better and what the differences are is to buy them both and shoot them a lot side by side.    8)

That's pretty much my methodology.  Most times I buy 2 of the same model so I have a valid sampling  before comparing them to other models.  You wouldn't want to screw up scientific method by doing 1-off comparisons.

I know, it's a sickness.
Do they have any insurance for that?
Although I do admit to not wanting any treatment or cure....

Thanks for the input and the correction. I pulled the weights off of Bud's description of the two. One was in Lbs. one was in Oz's. Maybe my math was wrong or maybe the wrong specs were published. They listed the Phantom at 2.6 lbs., which comes out to over 41 ozs. It didn't make sense to me either. Couldn't quite figure where the extra $150 was going. I do tend to like the added weight for a line gun. I was introduced to pistols in the service and the weight of the Colt 1911 was comforting. Probably where my love of steel comes from.

My SP-01 .40 is so smooth and easy to shoot, I decided to buy a Phantom because it a 9 and I expect similar similar results.

Did you make your decision? Buy it quick if you can! I just ordered my Phantom today. They still had the 75b sa, SP-01s a d Phantom but they won't for long. Last time the P10c was in stock I immediately put it in my cart, went to check out and saw a message saying it was out of stock.  It has been on my wish list since.

Edit: Spoke too soon. The cz75b is back in stock along with some SP-01 Tactical's, PCRs, etc.

If I was looking to buy a  full size carry,  I'd look at the Phantom.
If it's primarily for  range or action shooting,  I buy the steel SP01 and a few goodies from CZC  and/or CGW. :)
