Custom bench for RCBS bench primer
« on: November 23, 2017, 12:49:18 AM »
I ordered the RCBS bench primer. The main complaints I heard were:
1) That it was mounted to the bench thereby limiting where you could prime brass.
2) Taking up bench space.

Both of these are also important to me. I decided to make a little bench just for it that I could set anywhere I want. It arrived tonight and I made up a design and threw it together. I'd tell ya'll how it's working, but I forgot to order shell holders and they sent me 2 small primer sleeves... Trip to Cabela's in the morning!

The little bench is sturdy and will take all the pressure I'll need. The other bonus is that my Hornady primer tubes fit! I'll post an update when I get the shell holders and get it running.

Time to go back and make Version 2.0 from American black walnut.

And don't forget the maple inlays !!  O0

Looks solid in two directions.  Did you use Titebond II wood glue?  :D

No, not this time. I am going to give this version a try and see what happens. I have a tendency to overdo my benches and I was about to with this one. If the screws give out ill move forward with a modified version that includes glue and lots more support.

I don't think you'll get there. A preliminary stress analysis proves you've placed all the struts going in the correct direction. That thing is bomb-proof !!

The the vertical supports are 6" tall. I did that to raise it up and make it easier to reach to put shells in the shell holder. Also making it so I  don't have to hunch over to do so while I'm sitting on the floor watching a show or listening to a podcast.

Well, it turns out that's a little too high high for me to get good leverage on the arm when pressing down to seat the primer. It works, but not as well as I would like or is comfortable for doing many cases in one sitting. I've primed about 400 9mm cases so far.

I'll disassemble it and just stack them on top of one another and glue/screw together. Hopefully I'll have time in the next few evenings. Just wanted to give that feedback. If anyone is looking to do something like this.

In another week or so I'll time myself and see how fast and efficient this is, while still providing the liberty or priming anywhere I want. I'm mixed right now on my thoughts, but I need to work out these details and get a rhythm before final decisions.
