Old primers
« on: April 01, 2018, 03:23:34 PM »

Just stumbled across a bunch of primers I've forgot I owned & had for years (probably about 25-30 years).  Boxes of Large/Small, Rifle & Pistol of the CCI & Federal variety.

What is the general consensus (if any) on using NOS primers??  They have always been stored indoors but can't confirm the heat/cold/humidity variants since at times I have had household goods stored in warehouses during active duty moves.

I assume I could simply seat some up in empty cases to see if they light off.
Any members here ever use "vintage" primers?

Comments, concerns?

I'm still loading with primers I bought in the early 90's the case I just finished with were marked $6.99 per. thousand. Keep them dry and in a cool place they will last a very long time.

I had 4,000 primers in the attic for almost 25 years.  Used them all a few years back.  Everyone went bang.  My attic is hot/humid in the summer and cold/damp in the winter (central VA).  Same for the cans of powder that were up there.  Used almost all of it.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

I'm still using primers I bought in the 1970's, and have yet to have one fail.  Load, shoot, and repeat as necessary.

Hope this helps.

I used up some CCI small pistol primers last year. They all fired no problem and my dad bought them in the early 60's.

I disagree, they should be carefully packed and sent to me for disposal. I'll pay the hazmat fees.

I discovered some Herter's large rifle primers I bought in the mid sixties. They were fine.

I?ve had no issues with old primers....

Oh, for a moment there I thought you had said "old timers".

I was fixin' to give you a dump truck load of issues... but I can't remember where it's parked.
