Seating coated lead without hurting the coating.
« on: April 22, 2018, 07:41:55 AM »
Try as I might I cannot seem to eliminate these 2 gouges on the base of the bullet.  I have used Dillon, Horndady American and Lee seating dies all to the same affect.  I am belling the case approximately .016 over crimp diameter- which is what Dillon recommends.  I have tried belling the case mouth is comically large that only the Dillon can seat the bullet and still it has this issue.  I have no way of knowing if using the bullet pulled is causing this or the seating is.  I have so much bell the entire base sits inside the case mouth so I am skeptical that it?s happening on seating - but it?s there all the same.  Thoughts?

I don't see how you'd get marks, exactly opposite each other, from seating. I'd think they'd be on one side, or the other. I'm going to speculate it's happening from pulling.

What are you using to pull the bullets, and what led you to check for an issue?

Were you having problems with leading, or accuracy?
I had the right to remain silent...

but not the ability.

Dave, you pulled that bullet with an impact puller, correct?  :)

As Painter said, that comes from the act of pulling.  You whack the "hammer" on something hard, the bullet flies out of the case, hits the inside of the impact hammer, rebounds back up to the case, and the case mouth makes those gouges. Happens all the time, and confused people post this same question with some regularity.  Welcome to the club.  :)

That makes sense.  Yeah I am seating the things correctly then and not hurting the coating.  Good to know :P

Only seen that on kinetic pulled bullets.
If no leading then do not worry but do not load hot.

I put a foam ear plug inside my kinetic puller to buffer th impact. It prevents the gouges you are getting Dave.

I padded mine top and bottom (to protect HP noses),  and I only load jacketed.  The bullet hammered takes a big whack.
My hammer has  raised ridges in the bottom for structural reinforcement that could damage JHP noses if the user uses a one whack hit to release the bullet from the case. ::)
