I would suggest starting with a proven range platform such as this...

Is that 'Gunny Approved'? ;D

I carry "light" but well equipped for my shooting habits. I usually keep my outings to around
100-150 rounds per visit. I converted an old video Camera Bag into my Range bag. Lots of
movable dividers so I can reset the configuration of it as my needs change. Right now I have
it equipped to carry:
* My New CZ P-07 ( with full case and contents )
* A Pistol bag that contains my KAHR E9 and two mags.
* About 3 full boxes of 9mm Target ammo
* Eye and Ear Protection
* A small / light tool kit
* A small emergency First Aid Kit
* One each of a Silver - Gold and Black Sharpie Marker
* Small notepad and pen
* Compartment for Wallet, Cell Phone and Car Keys
( I don't like carrying anything in my pockets while I'm
shooting
).

I practice ONLY for personal defense situational shooting.
I shoot from between 5 yards and 12 yards out. Not beyond
that. The range where I shoot has restrictions on "bursts"
so a shoot a few mags between those ranges, and then the
last mag (or two) I shoot about 5 or 6 yards away in short
two and then three round bursts. About every other visit,
I'll shoot at various angles / stances to simulate odd
circumstances that someone might be forced to shoot from.
I've even done a few occasions of shooting from a sitting
position ( simulating the possible scenario of shooting
from sitting inside a car ).

I advocate preparing an "off to the range checklist". I moved and my fav range is now 45 miles one way, instead of the former 9. It can be as simple as a handwritten check sheet.

I also make a simple "ammo taken" sheet then once I return, rectify or tally, so I can keep a fairly accurate ammo "on hand" total. When you have a decent sized firearms collection and 5000+ rounds on hand, it pays to know "what ya really got".
