I advocate preparing an "off to the range checklist". I moved and my fav range is now 45 miles one way, instead of the former 9. It can be as simple as a handwritten check sheet.
I also make a simple "ammo taken" sheet then once I return, rectify or tally, so I can keep a fairly accurate ammo "on hand" total. When you have a decent sized firearms collection and 5000+ rounds on hand, it pays to know "what ya really got".
